KAMIKAZE

/ DISTORTION + BOOSTER

The Kamikaze combines a FET saturation stage with a LED clipping stage to give you the most organic and powerful distortion. Besides, thanks to its 20dB of clean boost you can switch between leads and rhythm with just the click of a button. Play with fire!

Controls

DIST: The amount of distortion. This control is very sensitive and provides a wide range of sounds. Set it carefully to get the desired sustain and saturation. Try setting a lower Dist and push it further with the Gain of the Booster.
LEVEL: Output level when only the Distortion section is active.
TREBLE: Treble control. Turn to the right for an open and bright tone, and to the left for a darker sound.
MASTER: Output level when both Distortion and Booster sections are engaged. This allows you to raise the output of the effect at the same time that boosting the input, to further overdrive the amp or get the perfect level for lead guitar parts.
GAIN: Gain applied by the Booster. A stronger signal gets into the Distortion circuit, getting more saturation and sustain out of it.
DISTORTION: Turns on/off the Distortion section. This true bypass switch allows your sound to remain intact when the effect is off.
BOOSTER: Turns on/off the Booster. This true bypass switch allows your sound to remain intact when the effect is off.

Technology

The Kamikaze's design combines two analog technologies, each contributing some of the gain and distortion. The first LED clipping stage provides the majority of the symmetrical distortion (the positive and negative sections of the waveform are affected equally). A subsequent FET saturation stage then rounds out the sound and contributes mostly even harmonics. The final sound is crunchy yet very natural, thanks in part to the filters applied above and between the stages, which concentrate the distortion at specific frequencies. The DIST knob controls the gain of both stages simultaneously, allowing for a wide variation in the amount of distortion.

The KAM-6 is the sixth incarnation of the Kamikaze, which we first released in 2009. Unlike previous versions, it uses red LEDs for a more classic sound. The bass is focused and the mids are boosted, achieving greater presence and cut in the mix, as well as a slightly rustic, less hi-fi tone.

The Booster adds 20 dB of gain that runs before and independently of the Distortion section, which can thus be heavily saturated. The gain is clean but carefully equalized to achieve the best performance when driving the next stage (which can be the KAM6's Distortion section or any subsequent circuit, including the amplifier!). The higher the gain, the greater the action of this filter.

How does the MASTER control work? It is only active when the BOOSTER and DISTORTION sections are engaged simultaneously. It replaces the LEVEL control as the final output volume, and in practice is used to achieve higher volume and higher gain when the Booster is engaged.

The op-amps used provide part of the pedal's tone and are extremely quiet, even at massive gain levels.
